The European Partnership for Action Against Cancer (EPAAC), signed in 2008 by all EU Member States, was launched in 2009 by the European Commission. The main aim of EPAAC is to improve patients’ outcomes, namely through sharing and benchmark best practices on cancer control strategies and care among European countries.
EPAAC Work Package 7 on Healthcare (WP7) has as one of its main objectives to implement a training strategy to improve provider-patient communication skills and psychosocial care in underserved European countries.
Good communication skills have proven to contribute for better patients’ clinical outcomes. As such it is recommended that clinicians and specifically physicians take training in communication skills as a way to optimize outcomes for patients. The new IPOS standard on quality cancer care confirms psychosocial oncology care as an important area that needs to be integrated in cancer treatment and care, and psychosocial distress to be measured routinely as the 6th vital sign in cancer settings. Romania, due to its recent development and mobilization towards improving patients’ cancer treatment and care, has been chosen to receive this EPAAC-WP7 workshop pilot-training.
The training will be provided by the main specialists in psycho-oncology in Europe and the workshop accredited by the International Psycho-Oncology Society (www.ipos-society.org).
There will be 2 training programs:
1st) Communication Skills Training (CST) targeting physicians treating cancer patients, from the main NHS cancer centres and relevant public hospitals in Romania – dates October 24-25, 2013. Download program here.
2nd) Psychosocial Oncology Care (PSOC) targeting professionals providing psychosocial care to cancer patients, mainly clinical health psychologists but also nurses and cancer physicians from the main NHS cancer centres and relevant public hospitals in Romania – dates November 18-20, 2013.
